FAQ'S

Q: WHY SHOULD I HIRE A BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHER?

A: This question always gets me!!!! Oh my! Seriously, out of ALL of life's moments, your baby entering the world has got to be the most important, right!? We photograph weddings, birthdays, first days of school, even funerals. Why NOT birth!? Hiring a professional to photograph your birth can seem like a foreign and strange concept to those who have never seen or experienced it before! Ask a parent "what was the best day of your life?" and they will most likely answer, “My wedding day, and the day my child was born.” We don’t think twice about investing in a professional photographer on our wedding day, why should it be any different for the birth of your baby? Having a professional birth photographer capture these moments for you frees up your partner/doula/family member to just be present & free to support you during your birth process.  The moments when you need your support team the most are usually when you need photos taken as well. Dad should CERTAINLY not be behind the lens of a camera or fiddling with an iPhone when his baby is entering the world & taking their first breaths! Their place is by their your side, helping to catch their baby, or simply wiping away tears.

I have 13 years experience in my field. I have also assisted as birthing coach for 6 births and have photographed dozens of births. I am very comfortable with the birthing process and am familiar with all sorts of scenarios. You can trust me to handle tricky lighting, tight surroundings & fast paced situations.

The other main component of my job that I offer as your photographer is to capture some of these amazing moments on video, which I use together with your still images to create a beautiful video set to music.  Imagine sitting down with your child someday, maybe when they are graduating high school or having a child of their own, and watching the day of their birth together. The photos & video selected for your slideshow are as modest as you would like them to be, so that you can feel comfortable sharing it with as few or as many people as you’d like.

Q: WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY DUE DATE WITH YOU?

A: As soon as you can! I book up quickly and only accept a limited number of births per month. Once your due date is on my calendar, I am “on call” 24/7 during the weeks surrounding your due date and devote my time to making sure I’m ready when baby is! Birth is unpredictable and my calendar is typically pretty packed! Please keep this in mind to reserve the time around your due date as early as possible!

Q: WHEN IS MY SESSION FEE DUE? DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?

A: Your session fee is due at booking and holds your due date on my calendar. The reason I require payment up front is it allows me to be totally committed to your due date. My personal life is structured around you, no other births will be booked around your due date, and I’m on call for you 24/7. If you need to do a payment plan, a minimum of $350 is due at the time of booking to reserve your due date, and you can pay however often you’d like up until 4 weeks before your estimated due date, which is when your final balance is due in full.

Q: WHEN DO I NOTIFY YOU THAT I'M IN LABOR?

A: In the weeks and days leading up to delivery, the more I hear from you the better! Once you book your due date with me, I put my self "on call" 24/7 during the weeks surrounding your due date. I appreciate any updates--from info you get at doctor visits, to middle of the night contractions, and I never ever mind getting a text like, "I THINK I'm in labor, we are heading to the hospital to find out!" Once you're actually in the hospital or birthing center, just keep me updated as much as you get updated! Usually moms just text me every time they get checked, what they're dilated at etc. and I just keep my phone super close and ready when active labor gets closer. Often, your nurse/midwife will know when to call me to come! I'll be there by the time you start pushing and I'm there until about an hour after baby arrives.

Q: WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE MY MATERNITY SESSION?

A: When your belly is round but before you're too uncomfortable! Usually around 29-34 weeks.

Q: HOW MUCH WILL YOU INTERACT WITH US DURING THE BIRTH?

A: I feel strongly that your birth experience should be YOURS. I know that it is a privilege that I'm there, and I hold that privilege very sacred. While my purpose is to be there to capture your babe's arrival, I will not insert myself as part of your birth experience. I am perfectly content to stand back in the shadows and not make a peep, and will find creative ways to get the perfect shot. There may be times that we will have more interaction, particularly depending on the intensity & stage of your labor.  I do not do any posing or adjusting, unless it is for modesty purposes, helping you to fix your hair if it has gotten a little crazy, or quickly getting a great first family photo. Please feel free to ask for specific images/moments to be captured, or to have me exit the room at any time. This is YOUR delivery and YOUR experience, I'm simply there to capture it on camera.

Q: HOW GRAPHIC WILL THE IMAGES BE?

A: We discuss all of this at your client meeting, but from my experience, most moms like having some graphic photos taken at the moment of birth, but only modest photos are used in any online publication. We will talk about your preferred level of modesty & you can make notes in your contract of specific things you would/would not like me to capture. I typically stand behind your head during the actual moment of delivery, but am happy to accommodate any requests. You call the shots, mama!

Q: WHERE IS YOUR SERVICE AREA?

A: I live in Bountiful, and photograph births from Ogden to Provo. If you live outside my service area, let me know and I will see if I can accommodate you.

Q: WHAT IF YOU ARE SICK OR OUT OF TOWN WHEN I GO INTO LABOR?

A: I believe the delivery environment should be as free of germs as possible. I will not attend your birth if I am running a fever, vomiting, have a new cough, sore throat or congestion. If I am recovering from a cold, I will voluntarily wear a mask. I have an incredible network of backup photographers that can be called on in an emergency. While I have yet to enlist the help of a backup in 13 years of photographing births, and I hope to never have to, it IS still a possibility. Beforehand, we will discuss who you would prefer to shoot your birth in the extremely slim chance that I would not be able to make it. (I provide you with a short list of available backups around your due date after you have paid your deposit and booked.) If you happen to deliver MUCH earlier than your due date, and I am out of town, I will do my best to get home asap (I skip up to Idaho to go fishing pretty often!) or I will call one of my back ups to get there for me. If you have booked a video package, you will be refunded $300 if a backup has to shoot your birth, since none of my backups currently shoot video. There is no refund for a basic photography-only package. If a backup has to shoot your birth, they hand the RAW photos over to me for editing, and I handle the rest from there.

Q: WHAT IF I LABOR SUPER FAST AND YOU CAN'T GET THERE IN TIME BEFORE THE BABY ARRIVES?

A: This happened once in the last 13 years. Mom text me at midnight and I left for the hospital. Baby was born at 12:17 in the hospital parking lot! We got some great images AFTER, but I DID in fact miss the actual delivery. Births are unpredictable and unfortunately the stars might not perfectly align, but I will get there as soon as possible. I don't offer refunds, but I will cover all that I can and offer you other coverage, like a free newborn session or family session when baby is older etc.
